Introduction to the Quick & Easy Copywriting Guide
Whether you’re writing for websites, product descriptions, emails, or social media posts, great copywriting can turn words into sales. This beginner-friendly copywriting guide will show you how to write clear, persuasive, SEO-optimised copy in six easy steps.
What Is Copywriting?
Copywriting is the art of writing words that sell. It’s used in many things, including adverts, websites, emails, social media, product descriptions and landing pages. Good copy grabs attention, speaks directly to the reader, and encourages them to take action .
Copywriting in 6 Easy Steps
Step 1: Know Your Audience
Before you write a single word, ask yourself:
Who am I writing for?
What do they need or want?
What problems do they have?
What kind of language do they use?
The more you understand your audience, the easier it is to write in a way that feels personal and relevant.
💡 Quick Tip: Create a quick audience profile or persona; are they busy mums? Techy teens? Small business owners?
Step 2: Focus on the Benefits, Not Just Features
Features tell people what something is, but benefits tell them what it does for them. Always base your copy on the benefits. So, in the instance of writing copy for a water bottle:
❌ DON’T SAY
‘It’s a 500ml stainless steel bottle.’
✅ SAY
‘It keeps your drinks cold all day, and is perfect for summer trips.’
Step 3: Use Clear, Simple Language
Your goal is to connect, not to impress. That means sticking with short sentences and everyday words. Be direct. Say things like ‘You’ll love this’ rather than ‘This is loved by customers’.
Step 4: Craft a Strong Headline
Headlines are the first impression. They should grab attention and make people want to read more.
Great headline formulas:
'How to [Achieve Something] Without [Problem].'
'X Tips for [Doing Something Easier/Faster/Better].'
'Struggling With [Problem]? Here’s the Fix.'
💡 Quick Tip: Keep headlines clear, not clever. Clarity wins clicks.
Step 5: Write Persuasive, Action-Oriented Copy
Your copy should guide the reader toward a goal. Use things like:
You-focused language: ('You’ll get…' not 'We offer…').
Emotional triggers: Fear, joy, relief, excitement.
Social proof: Testimonials, reviews, 'Trusted by X+ customers'.
Calls to Action (CTAs): 'Buy now,' 'Learn more,' 'Get started'.
Step 6: Optimise for SEO
Your copy needs to be optimised for search engines with things like keywords if you want it to be listed on websites like Google.
